Not long now, a sequel to one of the most influential films of the past 50 years would hit cinemas Blade Runner 2049. An announcement made today let us in on an upcoming film that’s based on the film’s universe—the animated short is being developed by none other than legendary anime filmmaker and writer Shinichiro Watanabe. Widely known for his works on the beloved anime show—a personal favorite of mine—Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
The short is titled; Blade Runner Black Out 2022, and it serves as a prequel—and in a way, a sequel to the first film, given its taking place 5 years after the events of the first one. From what we can conjure up, much of the story will be taking place during a massive power outage that has affected the city. Check out the newly released trailer of the short that serves also as a behind the scenes look at the making and inspirations.
The work behind the upcoming project is done by Anime studios Cygames Pictures who’re producing the short. While Shukou Murase (Halo Legends, Mobile Suit, Gundam Wing) have put their stamp on character design and animation director. We also know that Flying Lotus will be lending his talent on the presenting the score for the short.
Personally, im widely excited for this short, anything with Mr. Watanabe is a must-see. Blade Runner Black Out 2022 hits Sony Pictures Japan Youtube Channel on September 26th.
And of course, the motion picture Blade Runner 2049 hits theaters on October 6th.
