Cuphead is an upcoming run and gun shooter similar to Contra and Metal Slug, with at least one noticeably awesome difference; The game’s aesthetics give off a hand-drawn 1930’s cartoony feel.

The game has taken art direction from many famous 1930’s cartoons such as Swing you Sinners (1930) and Silly Symphony: The Skeleton Dance (1929), and the game looks absolutely amazing and like no video game I’ve seen before. Sure there have been plenty of games that have taken the hand-drawn artstyle and made it work from Viewtiful Joe to Braid, but this is an iconic look for cartoons and it blows my mind. It’s basically like playing a cartoon with all the chaos of a twitch reflex 2D shooter. Shoot ‘em Ups are some of my favorite games from childhood.

Created by Canadian brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer’s company, Studio MDHR, Cuphead has been in development since 2010, but really started picking up major buzz after being shown by Microsoft at E3 2014.

With all the crazy forward momentum that E3 caused, The brother’s decided to hire a few more people to ensure the game is released by the end of 2015, in order to capitalize on the buzz that’s been created thanks to Microsoft.

In Cuphead, players take control of the titular character as he runs and guns his way through various levels killing bosses in order to repay a debt that he owes to the devil. Who’d of thought suchs a sweet looking game could have such dark subject matter.

No firm release date as of now, but they’re pushing to have it released by the end of 2015. The game will support single play and co-op play, so you can look forward to a fun romp through a 1930’s cartoon by yourself or with a pal. Online co-op hasn’t been confirmed, but it seems like a no-brainer for such a high profile game to include the feature.

UPDATE: Release date is expected to be this year according their site
