Sony Interactive Entertainment and Developer Saber Interactive newly announced title game; NBA Playgrounds, a game that screams nostalgia as a spiritual successor to games like NBA Street and NBA Jam—released a brand new trailer. CEO Mathew Karch of Saber Interactive also released new details in regards to the game’s features via the PlayStation.Blog. See what’s to come, also check out its brand new gameplay trailer down below:

Shooting and Dunking:

According to Karch, whether you’re shooting, dunking, or doing a layup: timing is key. Letting go of the shoot button at the peak of your shooting motion will not only increase your shot percentage, it will give you bonus points if the timing is perfect. The same goes for layups and dunks as well. Karch says this mechanic “brings an added layer to NBA Playgrounds, where advanced players can be rewarded for learning the animations.”

Lottery Pick System:

If you score enough, your team will get to spin the “Lottery Pick wheel” for a short term bonus. Bonuses include super speed shoes, 12 inches of extra height on dunks, a 2x 3-pointer, and a glowing blue ball that increases your shot percentage. Another aspect of the Lottery Pick system is that it makes you think twice about pushing down and playing dirty on your opponent on defense, as you lose your lottery bar momentum. In the game, it’s playground rules, but playing a cleaner game does have its perks.

Defense:

Defense is important in NBA Playgrounds, whether that is timing your swipes to get a steal, or blocking a dunk or shot. Like NBA Street, you play with playground rules, which means pushing your opponent down.

Upgrading Your Players:

When you win in NBA Playgrounds, you are rewarded with new card packs that unlock both current and retired players. Sticking with a team for a while and focusing on unlocking their XP will give those players new moves. According to Kach, lots of players also have signature moves.

The game will also include solo-play, as with local multiplayer, and online multiplayer.

NBA Playgrounds launches sometime in May for $19.99, available only on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and the Nintendo Switch.
