Earlier today, Ubisoft along with the team behind The Division, Massive Entertainment announced they’re next project will be making James Cameron’s Avatar, into a game. Their goal is to build a game in which takes the player back to planet that everyone fell in love with, Pandora.
Not much was said about the game, only that’ll it’ll be available for PC and Consoles. However, what we did learn is that the game will be built on the same engine that ran The Division and the upcoming South Park game, the Massive Snowdrop engine. Ubisoft hopes the game can take the player back into the world of Pandora, with its vast terrain, strange inhabitants, and new regions to explore. Avatar director James Cameron after seeing a Snowdrop-run engine demo agreed to make the partnership with Ubisoft stating the following:
“What impressed me about Massive were the group’s passion for this project, and the power of its Snowdrop engine. With the power of [Snowdrop], and the team’s passion and obsessive focus on detail, we know they’re the right group to bring the beauty and danger of Pandora to life.”
With four sequels of Avatar on its way and in development, Massive and Lightstorm have stated their working side-by-side to expand much of Pandora’s scenic world for their upcoming game. My take is that we won’t be seeing the launch of this game until the year in which Avatar 2 is announced.
